Coin folders vs coin albums?
I”m currently using HE Harris folders to store my coins that aren’t encapsulated. I’m curious whether or not it’s a good idea to upgrade to US Mint Albums since they claim to be acid free and you can see both sides of the coin. Does anybody have any experience, thoughts, opinions, or any input on the folders vs albums? I don’t know anyone personally that uses the albums, so I figured I would ask the online community what they think before I spend $400 to upgrade my sets from folders to albums.
Albums have more protection and most today are acid free such as the Harris albums. Folders were inexpensive and were good for beginners but as the beginner started to buy the key and semi key coins better protection was needed. One must be care with the slides on albums and make sure the coin is centered into the hole so it will not rub on the coin. The problem with folders is that people push the coins in with their finger with out wearing gloves or using a soft clean cloth and the coin is sometimes hard to get into them. In reality it depends on what one can afford and also how much the coin is worth. An example is I have 2 sets of winged liberty head dimes (mercury) one set grades up to fine only so is in a Danco album. The other set is in high grade so the coins are in slabs and not an album and are in a box. I like proof coins and they are in air tite capsules. For modern everyday sets the holders are fine as long as one is careful but not for proofs or coins of high value.
