How come large employers are not actively lobbying for a single payer medical system like Canada’s?
Costs of medical coverage are constantly increasing. As a large employer, I would welcome a system that took the ongoing increases in medical insurance costs off my income statement. Even if I initially gave my employees raises equivalent the medical insurance premiums that I currently pay for their coverage, I’d still have gotten out of the future medical insurance premium increases, and I would have one less issue to deal with regarding my employees’ compensation.
Because in Canada not all medical are expenses are covered by provincial health insurance. Items like eyeglasses, dental, some prescription drug costs, etc. are not covered, so employers (some, not all) in Canada offer extended medical benefits to their employees to cover these costs. So while these types of plans cost less than a medical plan that needs to cover everything (i.e. routine checkups, emergency room visits, etc.), even if the U.S. adopts the same system as Canada you will not escape these costs completely. Plus the whole issue of medical insurance private vs. public is such a divisive and controversial issue that most businesses and corporations would rather let the politicians fight it out and get mud all over themselves rather than getting into the fray publicly, as the public may not view positively corporations getting into the debate.
