Rare coins are harder to sell because there are not a lot of buyers for it. Common coins are easier to sell, because more people have them and they cost more in bulk. That is how most coin dealers handle their business and the difference in knowledge between consumers and dealers might be enough of a gap, to cause some misunderstandings.
When you visit a coin shop to sell coins, you are expecting that the coin dealer/broker will give you the fair price for your coins and most of them usually do.
