Car Insurance Premiums: One Top Tip To Cutting The Cost
Vehicle insurance (be it annual or temporary car insurance), costs drivers a fairly large sum of money every year, but unfortunately it’s an unavoidable part of driving legally in the UK. There are however a few ways you can cut your insurance premium, and one of those ways is how you’ve chosen to describe your occupation.
The majority of people won’t put any real thought into their occupation when filling out an insurance application; they just tick the appropriate box and carry on with the form. However the way you phrase your job description and job title can have a real difference on your quote.
The reason this makes such a difference is that insurers percieve different occupations to be riskier than others, so they’ll categorise occupations with varying percieved risk levels. So to an insurance provider, one occupation is seen as riskier than another, and will therefore end in a more expensive premium.
The decisions made by insurers are not just based on assumptions however; their risk assesment comes from how regularly (and for how much) different professions claim for.
It’s tough to say which professions are where in the scale, as each insurer will have their own opinion. But in general, estate agents, chefs, doctors and cabin crew are amongst the most likely professions to claim, and therefore will likely get higher quotes on their insurance. Conversely, farmers, ambulance drivers and horticulturalists are among the least likely to make a claim.
It’s well worth bearing in mind, and you can test for yourself how much it makes a difference. Find an insurance site that offers an instant car insurance quote and see how much the final amount differs depending on your occupation, you’ll find in some instances it can as much as double based on nothing more than your job title.
Unfortunately, you can’t just outright lie about your profession on your application, as an insurer will most likely use this as a basis to reject any future claims. You can however change the way you word your job description, as this could make a difference (for example saying you work ‘in an office’ instead of ‘in a call centre’ could improve your quote).
So, whether you’re looking for one day car insurance on an old mini or annual insurance on a brand new Ferrari, it’s in your interest to do a bit of research before you fill out your application. You never know, you could end up saving a fortune!
