Brandenburg Gate
When was the Brandenburg Gate of Berlin first constructed and what it was used for?

Also, how many other gates were there to the City of Berlin , how compared to the Brandenburg Gate and why , when they were torn down?

also, before were the different gates connected or not? (what kept people from going around the gates?)

***final question***: was Berlin one of the only cities in Europe that had gates to it, such as this? where this idea borrowed from and why Berlin had this special about it? who visited Berlin in the days the gates were constructed? and did it prevent certain people from entering the city? why and how so?

also, any other
(edit to above)..also, were taxes or tolls collected to enter or leave the city or both? who entered Berlin, again and why? for how long this way?

It was built in the 1730s as part of an excise wall around Berlin with 14 gates. The Brandenburg Gate was constructed in 1734. The gate was originally built to control entry into the city and to levy tariffs on goods being brought into (not out of) the city. With the spread of the city the wall was moved several times but in 1860 it was formally dissolved and was torn down between 1867 and 1870 but the Brandenberg gate was left.
The gate became so famous because the Nazi’s adopted it as a party symbol. It was later a symbol of the infamous Berlin Wall and then with the destruction of the wall it became a symbol of a unified Germany.

Toll gates were widely used and many cities had them, including London, the earliest recorded being in 1346 passing from St Giles to Temple Bar and also passing towards Gray’s Inn Lane, then know as Portpool. There were also many toll bars across roads.
