Why are some peoples lives worth more than others?
The Holocaust was a terrible thing. The terrible deaths of up to 6,000,000 people is an event is seared in the consciousness of mankind.
However the death toll in the Congo Free State under the rule of Leopold 2 of Belgium was estimated at 10,000,000 or more. Yet hardly anyone has heard about the event.
So why is the Holocaust so much more important to mankind than the extermination of the people of the Congo?
There is no such thing as one person’s life being more valuable than another’s. It is sad that the death of certain people are more recognized than others. But the death toll in the Congo Free State is not the only event in history that most people don’t know about. There are many others tradgedies; many other lives that are not recognized today that should be. It is not that the Holocaust is more important to mankind than the extermination of the people in the Congo. It’s just that the Holocaust affected the Americans more…The Americans took place in the war and though they were too late to stop Hitler from killing thousands, they eventually did help end the war and put a stop to Hitler. The Holocaust is also more recent. But death happens everyday, all around us, all over the world, and sometimes we fail to recognize that as well.
