Who would you like to see on the Bank of England bank notes?
As we say goodbye to Edward Elgar, there have been complaints that art, music and literature are no longer adequately represented on bank notes in the UK (excluding Scotland of course who keep Robert Burns).
Currently the denominations and their representatives are:
£5 – Elizabeth Fry – social reformer
Emmeline Pankhurst
Leader of the ‘Votes For Women’ campaign.
In 1999, Time Magazine named her as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th Century.
They said: “she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back”.
Thomas Hobbs (born 1588) – The founder (according to most historians – however, Americans always want to claim this for themselves) of the idea of Rights, all men being born equal and free etc.
Have we had Shakespeare yet? I think they do change the images every so often, so I’m not sure. I think it’s a great idea because it makes people find out about history, and the history of ideas and culture is globally significant.
