Austrian Coin
Why would my Macedonian Grandmother have an Austrian Coin?

My Grandmother just past away and I have been wearing this necklace she gave me often. She told me she brought it with her when she immigrated from Macedonia between WWI and WWII. This is what I know she lived in a part of Macedonia that was at the time ruled by Serbia. The coin on the necklace is an Austrian Ducet. It is a Francis Joseph 1915 remint. I know Austria printed these after WWI and gave it an older date to give it more gravity. This coin and a handful of others my cousins have were all the money my Grandmother brought with her. My question is why would she have Austrian currency, or is this perhaps something she bought later to give to us as a way to connect us to our past?

All these countries are/were very close to each other. Perhaps she traveled there before coming to the US, or perhaps her father traveled there and gave her the coin. Or perhaps it was given to her after he died. There could be many, many reasons for her to have an Austrian coin.
