Austria Thaler

Need expert coin help@!@!@! Austrian Silver Thaler?
My grandmother has multiple Austrian Silver Thalers and gold 10 Coronas. my question is how much are these Silver Thalers worth? they are in wonderful condition! these are not replicas or restrikes. Original! She is from Austria and her grandfather had these coins. the silver coins are dated 1780. and (ORIGINAL) how much are these original coins worth? please help me here. i need to know!
They are pretty much bullion coins, worth the value of the silver or gold content in them plus perhaps as much as a ten per cent premium.
Austria has been restriking the silver 1780 thalers and the 1915 gold coronas, in various denominations, for quite some time, right up to today. It’s impossible to tell exactly when they were struck.
But, it’s very possible that your grandmother’s grandfather was living in 1915 when the original gold coins were struck, and has some of those. Because they weren’t rare, they are essentially gold investment coins more than collector coins, and so aren’t really worth any more than the restrikes.
Now, as for the silver thalers – Again, it’s almost impossible to tell the older restrikesl from the current restrikes. I have one that my father obtained back in the 1970s, so it’s close to 40 years old and looks as new as the day it was struck. Because so many restrikes have been made, there are also very many of these that have been artificially aged to look as though they might be from 1780, and are criminally sold as original to unsuspecting novice collectors. So, I doubt very much that your multiple silver coins are genuine 1780 examples. They just don’t go 200+ years without picking up wear and toning. Don’t forget that these were popular world trade coins, and in fact, were accepted in the colonies and in the early days of our nation as legal currency, due to the trust people had in the stated fineness of Austrian silver. Coins that old got used, they didn’t sit around untouched.
Your great-great grandfather probably got some restrikes years ago and saved them. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m guessing fairly young. I’m not quite old enough to be your grandmother’s age, but add ten years and I could. And I have a sister ten years older. That could make your grandmother’s grandfather and my grandfather being born around the same time, which was 1890 (he died in 1969). Certainly my grandfather’s lifespan encompassed a good portion of the period that restrikes were made, and if his did, so did your great-great grandfather’s. And with him being in Austria, he’d get them a lot easier than anyone in the US.
Sorry to tell you that they’re not rare and old. But they do have excellent value. The silver coins are worth a minimum of $20- $25 each right now, and the 10 coronas start at $140 and go up in higher mint state grades.
