Jailed Chinese Dissident Liu Xiaobo Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Although he probably hasn’t received word of his recognition, Liu Xiaobo was announced as the winner of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Friday. Liu, a Chinese literary critic and the country’s most prominent human rights dissident, is in prison. Liu Xiaobo’s award of the Nobel Peace Prize is a strong message from the Nobel committee to a Chinese government coming under increasing international pressure to offer more basic individual freedoms to its citizens.

Tiananmen Square leader ends up being Nobel laureate

Liu Xiaobo was a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Now he was convicted of subversion leading to an 11 year sentence. The New York Times reports that by awarding the prize to Liu, the Norwegian Nobel Committee gave substance to an international rebuke of Beijing’s growing intolerance of dissent. The awarding of the “desecration” of the Nobel Pease Prize to “criminal” Liu was bad for Norwegian-Chinese relations. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed this. There are numerous arrests and harassments towards Liu since 1989. He began the hunger strike in Tiananmen then which ended with students backing off to keep safe from the soldiers ready to strike.

Nobel laureates seem to get imprisoned

Liu Xiaobo can be added to the list of Nobel Peace Prize winners who have been awarded the honor when incarcerated. The first Nobel Peace laureate that was in jail when getting their prize was anti-Nazi journalist Carl von Ossietzky who had been, within the mid-1930s, in Hitler’s Germany prison, reports CNN. Numerous of these people, including Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Aung Kyi and Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, weren’t able to get their awards in person and neither will he unless he is let out in December to receive the award in Oslo.

The special purpose for Liu’s Nobel

China’s economy is impossible to stay away from engaging with. That does not mean that it hasn’t been noticed that Beijing has suppressed dissent that could be seen. Epstein has the idea that “peaceful, noble and brave actions” are getting Chinese dissidents in trouble. They end up locked up and never to be heard of. A previous Nobel contender was human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng. He ended up in jail without a word out making him lose that spot. Since the economy in China is so well, maybe the Chinese government will determine its people could be free with the economy as a result of Liu’s Nobel.
