Using A Painting To Reveal Its Mysticism
Opening recently was a local star billed stage show called the innocents. And at the set of this show hangs a picture, the subject of countless strange stories and tales. And the long time owner of this picture is someone who maintains anonymity. She stood there thinking about how she cannot afford that photo, but nothing could stop her from purchasing it as she stood at the counter. School was round the corner and they needed her to purchase supplies, clothes and books for them. So she thought to herself first that she will tell the clerk that while it was a beautiful portrait, she just can’t afford to purchase it. I have to get that portrait no matter what, the woman suddenly shrieked and this stopped the clerk from returning it back on wall where it previously hung.
A problem presented itself for her as she tried to figure how she would explain to her husband her compulsion at buying the photo, and after paying for it she hurried out of the antique store, still not being able to explain to herself how she got it even as she could not even afford it and neither had a need for it. It was an oil painting done perhaps in the late 1900′s or early 1900′s, and its subject was a Russian wolfhound, a Borzoi. Even though it’s a lovely picture, to the trained eye of one who is familiar with the Borzoi, it is easy to see that the Borzoi in the picture, the artist chose to paint in an almost straight on pose, only the dog’s head and shoulders. And the shoulders and chest seem to be a bit out of proportion.
Absurd is the fact that even as the woman was extremely familiar with how a Borzoi should look like, she still went ahead and got it. Eerily, when her husband came home that night, the lady was initially scared that he would get mad as she bought that before the things needed by their children, but then it was so ironic that he also felt some attraction towards it like she did. There never was an instance that two photographs of this portrait ever came out the same and there have been so many photo amateurs and experts that took shots of it. It was both creepy and amazing how strange lights would linger on the painting’s surface, sometimes making it look like it was in color and then black and white sometimes, then there would also be moments when the dog would appear to be flat then three dimensional all of a sudden but the most bizarre instance would perhaps be a spectral face showing on its right side.
I think it is just the light reflections or more so, our hyperactive imaginations, the husband shared as he told his wife that he does not think that there is something strange about the picture that she bought. It was creepy how a large ceramic plate which hung on the wall fell to the ground but as they saw it, it was not broken and neither did it have a crack.
The owners of the portrait were approached by the producer director who heard about the painting and explained to them that his play was a story of the supernatural so they gladly agreed when he asked them if he could loan it for the set of his production, The Innocents. We never truly found out who or what it is that moved into our home the day we got the portrait and perhaps you can help us with this as we lend this to you for your production, the Innocents, the couple told the producer.
