Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Celebrated With Omega Watches
For the past year, the 10-meter Olympic Countdown Omega Timepieces in Singapore’s Orchard Road and Marina Bay ticked down the seconds to the Opening Ceremony of the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
At exactly 8.10pm on 14th of August, 2010, the Countdown Clock reached zero. At the same moment, the dazzling Opening Ceremony held at the Marina Bay floating platform began to the sounds of the applause and the enthusiastic shouts of more than 27,000 cheering spectators. Amongst the audience were Singapore President S.R Nathan, Mr Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee and Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.
The end of the countdown also signaled the time for OMEGA‘s 500 professional timekeepers, data handlers and volunteers to take the stage. OMEGA is responsible for the timing of all 201 events in 26 different sports at 18 competition venues. 82 tonnes of state-of-the-art timekeeping equipment, including 95 public and sport-specific scoreboards, 100km of cables and optical fibre and 30 TV graphic generators will be used at the Youth Olympic Games.
OMEGA first served as Official Olympic Timekeeper at the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games. Following the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, the Swiss watchmaker will resume its timekeeping role at the London 2012 Olympic Games before turning its attention to a very busy 2014 which will feature the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and the next edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
