Ancient Ruins

Why do all ancient ruins seem to lack a roof or ceiling? Lots of mighty pillars and arches and some horizontal?
members, but no real ceiling?
For example, the Parthenon, and all the roman ruins and all the mezo-american ruins.
Except the pyramids of course, but they are basically solid bodies with a few hidden passages.
stonehenge too.
well, i know roofs can collapse, but there is no evidence of a roof, no rubble, as far as in know.
Not all, but very many ancient ruins have little remains of their original roofs. This is because of a wide variety of reasons.
In some cases, like Stonehenge, there may not have ever been a roof or the roof was built of materials (perhaps wood or even vines) which have decomposed over the centuries. The Roman Colosseum is another example of a ruin which may have not had a classical roof.
Cave roofs tend to fall to the floor of the caves. The same can be said of stone and bricks which may have been held with mortar which did not hold over time.
Keep in mind that a horizontal beam has more stress than a vertical column does and that most ancient ruins that exist today have had repair and restoration done on them over the centuries.
Long stone beams and large flat rocks have always been premium building materials. Often the missing roof and ceiling materials were removed from the original building sites and recycled into other structures.
Arches tend to be stronger than post and lintel constructions. Arches have tended to survive while lintels tend to break into smaller pieces that may have been used in other buildings.
