African States
How was the Muslim culture in East African city-states spread?
I have this question in an upcoming World History test, and can’t find the answer in the text. Does someone care to help a good fellow out? Thanks! 
Islam is a religion, *not* a culture. Which East African city-states? Ethiopian, Somali, Sudanese…? I don’t know how Westerners think Islam came into East Africa but as both an East African and Muslim, I know that Islam first came to Ethiopia when Prophet Mohamed’s followers sought asylum in Ethiopia, which was granted to them by an Ethiopian king. The first East African Muslim was Bilal. From there, I believe that from Bilal and other East African Muslims, they spread the message of Islam to other East African regions. In Sudan, though, it’s possible that it may have come to them from Arabs who came to trade with them or to invade (I’m not as well-read on Sudanese history, I’m better with Somali and Ethiopian).
