South Africa prices on gold and diamonds.?
I have heard over the years that South Africa is known for good prices on gold and diamonds. Have you a recent experience in such purchases? I would be looking for a nice piece of jewelery befitting an upper middle-class, middle-aged American woman that is a memorable piece–not overly expensive but nice. Is there a “bureau” or something in South Africa that rates jewelers and their reputations? What are the most recent guidelines in terms of getting the VAT tax back prior to leaving? Any general advice in this would be appreciated!
There is no jeweller regulator. Reputable jewellers can be found in all South African cities at major shopping centres. While price obviously varies according to quality, carat etc. I doubt that prices vary much from international prices as gold prices fluctuate according to international markets. When purchasing jewellery or any expensive product for that matter be sure to get a tax invoice allowing you to be paid back the 14% VAT upon departure from South Africa.
